Digital Fortress Chapter 32 Free Essays
David Becker stood in the hallway outside suite 301. He knew that somewhere behind the ornately carved door was the ring. A matter of national security. We will write a custom essay sample on Digital Fortress Chapter 32 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Becker could hear movement inside the room. Faint talking. He knocked. A deep German accent called out. ââ¬Å"Ja?â⬠Becker remained silent. ââ¬Å"Ja?â⬠The door opened a crack, and a rotund Germanic face gazed down at him. Becker smiled politely. He did not know the manââ¬â¢s name. ââ¬Å"Deutscher, ja?â⬠he asked. ââ¬Å"German, right?â⬠The man nodded, uncertain. Becker continued in perfect German. ââ¬Å"May I speak to you a moment?â⬠The man looked uneasy. ââ¬Å"Was willst du? What do you want?â⬠Becker realized he should have rehearsed this before brazenly knocking on a strangerââ¬â¢s door. He searched for the right words. ââ¬Å"You have something I need.â⬠These were apparently not the right words. The Germanââ¬â¢s eyes narrowed. ââ¬Å"Ein ring,â⬠Becker said. ââ¬Å"Du hast einen Ring. You have a ring.â⬠ââ¬Å"Go away,â⬠the German growled. He started to close the door. Without thinking, Becker slid his foot into the crack and jammed the door open. He immediately regretted the action. The Germanââ¬â¢s eyes went wide. ââ¬Å"Was tust du?â⬠he demanded. ââ¬Å"What are you doing?â⬠Becker knew he was in over his head. He glanced nervously up and down the hall. Heââ¬â¢d already been thrown out of the clinic; he had no intention of going two for two. ââ¬Å"Nimm deinen Fu? weg!â⬠the German bellowed. ââ¬Å"Remove your foot!â⬠Becker scanned the manââ¬â¢s pudgy fingers for a ring. Nothing. Iââ¬â¢m so close, he thought. ââ¬Å"Ein Ring!â⬠Becker repeated as the door slammed shut. David Becker stood a long moment in the well-furnished hallway. A replica of a Salvador Dali hung nearby. ââ¬Å"Fitting.â⬠Becker groaned. Surrealism. Iââ¬â¢m trapped in an absurd dream. Heââ¬â¢d woken up that morning in his own bed but had somehow ended up in Spain breaking into a strangerââ¬â¢s hotel room on a quest for some magical ring. Strathmoreââ¬â¢s stern voice pulled him back to reality: You must find that ring. Becker took a deep breath and blocked out the words. He wanted to go home. He looked back to the door marked 301. His ticket home was just on the other side-a gold ring. All he had to do was get it. He exhaled purposefully. Then he strode back to suite 301 and knocked loudly on the door. It was time to play hardball. The German yanked open the door and was about to protest, but Becker cut him off. He flashed his Maryland squash club ID and barked, ââ¬Å"Polizei!â⬠Then Becker pushed his way into the room and threw on the lights. Wheeling, the German squinted in shock. ââ¬Å"Was machst-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Silence!â⬠Becker switched to English. ââ¬Å"Do you have a prostitute in this room?â⬠Becker peered around the room. It was as plush as any hotel room heââ¬â¢d ever seen. Roses, champagne, a huge canopy bed. Rocio was nowhere to be seen. The bathroom door was closed. ââ¬Å"Prostituiert?â⬠The German glanced uneasily at the closed bathroom door. He was larger than Becker had imagined. His hairy chest began right under his triple chin and sloped outward to his colossal gut. The drawstring of his white terry-cloth Alfonso XIII bathrobe barely reached around his waist. Becker stared up at the giant with his most intimidating look. ââ¬Å"What is your name?â⬠A look of panic rippled across the Germanââ¬â¢s corpulent face. ââ¬Å"Was willst du? What do you want?â⬠ââ¬Å"I am with the tourist relations branch of the Spanish Guardia here in Seville. Do you have a prostitute in this room?â⬠The German glanced nervously at the bathroom door. He hesitated. ââ¬Å"Ja,â⬠he finally admitted. ââ¬Å"Do you know this is illegal in Spain?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nein,â⬠the German lied. ââ¬Å"I did not know. Iââ¬â¢ll send her home right now.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m afraid itââ¬â¢s too late for that,â⬠Becker said with authority. He strolled casually into the room. ââ¬Å"I have a proposition for you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Ein Vorschlag?â⬠The German gasped. ââ¬Å"A proposition?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. I can take you to headquarters right nowâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Becker paused dramatically and cracked his knuckles. ââ¬Å"Or what?â⬠the German asked, his eyes widening in fear. ââ¬Å"Or we make a deal.â⬠ââ¬Å"What kind of deal?â⬠The German had heard stories about the corruption in the Spanish Guardia Civil. ââ¬Å"You have something I want,â⬠Becker said. ââ¬Å"Yes, of course!â⬠the German effused, forcing a smile. He went immediately to the wallet on his dresser. ââ¬Å"How much?â⬠Becker let his jaw drop in mock indignation. ââ¬Å"Are you trying to bribe an officer of the law?â⬠he bellowed. ââ¬Å"No! Of course not! I just thoughtâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The obese man quickly set down his wallet. ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠¦ Iâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He was totally flustered. He collapsed on the corner of the bed and wrung his hands. The bed groaned under his weight. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry.â⬠Becker pulled a rose from the vase in the center of the room and casually smelled it before letting it fall to the floor. He spun suddenly. ââ¬Å"What can you tell me about the murder?â⬠The German went white. ââ¬Å"Mord? Murder?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. The Asian man this morning? In the park? It was an assassination-Ermordung.â⬠Becker loved the German word for assassination. Ermordung. It was so chilling. ââ¬Å"Ermordung? Heâ⬠¦ he wasâ⬠¦?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠ââ¬Å"Butâ⬠¦ but thatââ¬â¢s impossible,â⬠the German choked. ââ¬Å"I was there. He had a heart attack. I saw it. No blood. No bullets.â⬠Becker shook his head condescendingly. ââ¬Å"Things are not always as they seem.â⬠The German went whiter still. Becker gave an inward smile. The lie had served its purpose. The poor German was sweating profusely. ââ¬Å"Wh-wh-at do you want?â⬠he stammered. ââ¬Å"I know nothing.â⬠Becker began pacing. ââ¬Å"The murdered man was wearing a gold ring. I need it.â⬠ââ¬Å"I-I donââ¬â¢t have it.â⬠Becker sighed patronizingly and motioned to the bathroom door. ââ¬Å"And Rocio? Dewdrop?â⬠The man went from white to purple. ââ¬Å"You know Dewdrop?â⬠He wiped the sweat from his fleshy forehead and drenched his terry-cloth sleeve. He was about to speak when the bathroom door swung open. Both men looked up. Rocio Eva Granada stood in the doorway. A vision. Long flowing red hair, perfect Iberian skin, deep-brown eyes, a high smooth forehead. She wore a white terry-cloth robe that matched the Germanââ¬â¢s. The tie was drawn snugly over her wide hips, and the neck fell loosely open to reveal her tanned cleavage. She stepped into the bedroom, the picture of confidence. ââ¬Å"May I help you?â⬠she asked in throaty English. Becker gazed across the room at the stunning woman before him and did not blink. ââ¬Å"I need the ring,â⬠he said coldly. ââ¬Å"Who are you?â⬠she demanded. Becker switched to Spanish with a dead-on Andalusian accent. ââ¬Å"Guardia Civil.â⬠She laughed. ââ¬Å"Impossible,â⬠she replied in Spanish. Becker felt a knot rise in his throat. Rocio was clearly a little tougher than her client. ââ¬Å"Impossible?â⬠he repeated, keeping his cool. ââ¬Å"Shall I take you downtown to prove it?â⬠Rocio smirked. ââ¬Å"I will not embarrass you by accepting your offer. Now, who are you?â⬠Becker stuck to his story. ââ¬Å"I am with the Seville Guardia.â⬠Rocio stepped menacingly toward him. ââ¬Å"I know every police officer on the force. They are my best clients.â⬠Becker felt her stare cutting right through him. He regrouped. ââ¬Å"I am with a special tourist task force. Give me the ring, or Iââ¬â¢ll have to take you down to the precinct and-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"And what?â⬠she demanded, raising her eyebrows in mock anticipation. Becker fell silent. He was in over his head. The plan was backfiring. Why isnââ¬â¢t she buying this? Rocio came closer. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know who you are or what you want, but if you donââ¬â¢t get out of this suite right now, I will call hotel security, and the real Guardia will arrest you for impersonating a police officer.â⬠Becker knew that Strathmore could have him out of jail in five minutes, but it had been made very clear to him that this matter was supposed to be handled discreetly. Getting arrested was not part of the plan. Rocio had stopped a few feet in front of Becker and was glaring at him. ââ¬Å"Okay.â⬠Becker sighed, accentuating the defeat in his voice. He let his Spanish accent slip. ââ¬Å"I am not with the Seville police. A U.S. government organization sent me to locate the ring. Thatââ¬â¢s all I can reveal. Iââ¬â¢ve been authorized to pay you for it.â⬠There was a long silence. Rocio let his statement hang in the air a moment before parting her lips in a sly smile. ââ¬Å"Now that wasnââ¬â¢t so hard, was it?â⬠She sat down on a chair and crossed her legs. ââ¬Å"How much can you pay?â⬠Becker muffled his sigh of relief. He wasted no time getting down to business. ââ¬Å"I can pay you 750,000 pesetas. Five thousand American dollars.â⬠It was half what he had on him but probably ten times what the ring was actually worth. Rocio raised her eyebrows. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s a lot of money.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes it is. Do we have a deal?â⬠Rocio shook her head. ââ¬Å"I wish I could say yes.â⬠ââ¬Å"A million pesetas?â⬠Becker blurted. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s all I have.â⬠ââ¬Å"My, my.â⬠She smiled. ââ¬Å"You Americans donââ¬â¢t bargain very well. You wouldnââ¬â¢t last a day in our markets.â⬠ââ¬Å"Cash, right now,â⬠Becker said, reaching for the envelope in his jacket. I just want to go home. Rocio shook her head. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t.â⬠Becker bristled angrily. ââ¬Å"Why not?â⬠ââ¬Å"I no longer have the ring,â⬠she said apologetically. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve already sold it.â⬠How to cite Digital Fortress Chapter 32, Essay examples

Othello Essays (669 words) - Othello, Iago, Michael Cassio, Roderigo
Othello In Shakespeare's Othello, the character Iago, Othello's lieutenant, is the cause of all the tragedy which comes to pass as the play progresses. Iago is the antagonist of the play, but rather than being the direct opponent to the tragic hero, Iago is a manipulator, opposing Othello not directly but through other characters whom he tricks into acting for him. In the first scene of the play, Iago gives the audience warning that he is not all that he seems when he says, "I am not what I am." (I,i,65) He is first seen in this scene appearing to help Roderigo, a suitor to Desdemona, who has run off with Othello, the Moorish general of the Venician army. Iago hates Othello for another reason. Instead of choosing him to be his lieutenant, Othello chose Cassio, another foreigner, and relegated Iago to the position of his ancient. When Roderigo asks why Iago continues to serve Othello, in spite of how the general has treated him, Iago replies, "I follow him to serve my turn upon him." (I,i,42) He goes on to give an example of how he intends to serve him, by acting like the perfect servant, while secretly enriching himself, and later says, "In following him, I follow but myself." (I,i,58) From this, one might think that he is still fairly straightforward in his plans, that he merely intends to betray Othello at some later date. However, in the third scene, he shows the audience his ability to manipulate people, when he convinces Roderigo to follow him to Cyprus and to bring all of his money, presumably to win back Desdemona. After Roderigo has left to do what Iago has suggested, Iago says, "Thus do I ever make my fool my purse." (I,iii,37 y9) Later, in Act IV, we find that Roderigo has been giving jewels to Iago to give to Desdemona, which Iago, it is implied, has sold for his own uses. Thus, it is seen that Iago is merely using Roderigo to further his own ends, just as he said he was only serving Othello to serve himself. Also at the end of the third scene, Iago sets forth his plan to take Cassio's position, by telling Othello that his lieutenant ". . . is too familiar with his wife." (I,iii,402) It also comes out in this speech that he suspects Othello of committing adultery with his wife. Near the end of the first scene of the second act, Iago convinces Roderigo, who was observing Cassio's enthusiastic greeting of Desdemona, that Cassio and Desdemona have something going on between them. Thus manipulating Roderigo through his passion for Desdemona, Iago convinces him to provoke Cassio to anger, so that the lieutenant will be discredited in Othello's eyes and Iago can take his position. At the end of this scene, he again makes reference to his role not being what it seems: "Knavery's plain face is never seen till us'd." (II,i,324) In the last scene, after Othello has killed Desdemona, all of Iago's schemes are revealed by his wife, who was his unwitting accomplice in his schemes. After she has betrayed him, he kills her and flees, only to be caught and brought to justice. Othello's flaw, as Iago pointed out, was that he was "... of a free and open nature,/That thinks men honest that but seem to be so,/And will as tenderly be led by the nose/As asses are." (I,iii,405-408) Thus, Iago's scheming and roleplaying character made it easy for him to manipulate Othello, which led to Othello's fall. From his actions in the play, one sees that Iago is a gifted manipulator of other people who uses underhanded schemes, manipulation of others, and betrayal at appropriate times. Thus, one could say that the whole play is a parable showing the "vile success" such tactics bring, and also showing the reward awaiting those who use them. Hence, Iago in Othello is a schemer and manipulator, who causes the deaths of all of the virtuous characters in the play while attempting to advance his position and revenge himself upon Othello for a rumoured affair with his wife. He is portrayed by Shakespeare as a completely unsympathetic character.

Find out What a Bulbous Bow Is
Find out What a Bulbous Bow Is The strongest resistance any vessel faces in standard operations comes from displacement as the hull moves through the water. Waves that climb the bow are water being pushed aside faster than it can move away. It takes a lot of power to overcome the viscosity and mass of water and that means burning fuel, which adds to costs. A bulbous bow is an extension of the hull just below the waterline. It has many subtle shape variations but itââ¬â¢s basically a rounded front portion that flares out slightly as it blends into the traditional displacement hull construction. These forward protrusions are about twice as long as the width of the base and they would usually not extend forward past the top of the bow. The basic principle is to create a low-pressure zone to eliminate the bow wave and reduce drag. First appearing on the USS Delaware in 1910, the bulbous bow was a controversial design of U.S. Navy Ship Architect David W. Taylor. Much of the controversy disappeared ten years later when passenger ships began exploiting the design to increase speeds. Hulls built with bulbous bow sections are common today. Under certain conditions, this type of design is very efficient at redirecting forces of hydrodynamic resistance and drag. There is a movement against bulbous bows that allows greater flexibility of ships at a time when slow steaming is a way to save fuel. Good Conditions for Bulbous Bows The design of a ship with a bulbous bow is discussed in many textbooks and technical articles. It is often referred to as a theory or an art, which is a short way of saying nobody is 100 percent sure of what they are writing. There are details to be worked out but modern builders have proprietary ways of analyzing and integrating all hydrodynamic aspects of their hulls and these methods are strict secrets. A bulbous bow works best under certain conditions and good design gives efficiency gains throughout the range of these factors. Speed ââ¬â At low speeds, a bulbous bow will trap water above the bulb without forming a low-pressure zone to cancel the bow wave. This leads to increased drag and loss of efficiency. Each design has what is known as most efficient hull speed, or often just hull speed. This term refers to the speed where the shape of the hull is acting on the water is such a way to produce the minimum possible drag. This ideal hull speed might not be the top speed of a ship because at some point the lower pressure zone created by the bow features becomes larger than necessary. A zone of lower pressure water that is larger than the hull is inefficient and leads to reduced rudder response. Ideally, the cone of lower pressure water will collapse just before the props. This gives the prop blades something to push against and limits cavitation at the props and rudder. Cavitation will lead to reduced efficiency of props, sluggish steering, and excessive wear of hull and drive components. Size ââ¬â Vessels under 49 feet (15 m) do not have enough wetted area to take advantage of a bulbous bow. The amount of drag on a hull is related to its wetted area. The structure of the bulb also increases drag and at a certain point, the benefits shrink to zero. Conversely, larger ships with a high proportion of waterline to frontal area use the bulbous bow most effectively. Bad Conditions for Bulbous Bows Rough Seas ââ¬â While a traditional hull rises with the wave, a hull with a bulbous bow can dig in even if it is designed to lift the bow under normal conditions. The issue of trim is one of the most deeply dividing aspects of bow design among naval architects. There is also a huge psychological aspect among crews who perceive this bow design as dangerous in storms. There is some truth that these bows dig into wave faces but there is little proof that it is more dangerous than traditional designs. Ice ââ¬â Some ice breaking ships do have a special shape of a bulbous bow that is heavily reinforced. Most bulbous bows are prone to damage since they are the first point of contact with an obstacle. In addition to ice, large debris and fixed objects like dock faces can damage these extended underwater bows.

How Sequestration and Mandatory Federal Spending Cuts Work
How Sequestration and Mandatory Federal Spending Cuts Work Sequestration is the federal governments way of applying mandatory spending cuts across most programs and agencies during the budgeting process. Members of Congress use sequestration to reduce spending across the board when the governments annual deficit reaches a point that is unacceptable to them. Congress imposed spending caps on discretionary portions of federal spending through 2021, a move that was designed to save taxpayers about $1.2 trillion over nearly a decade. Sequestrationà Definition The Congressional Research Service defines sequestrationà this way: In general, sequestration entails the permanent cancellation of budgetary resources by a uniform percentage. Moreover, this uniform percentage reduction is applied to all programs, projects, and activities within a budget account. However, the current sequestration procedures, as in previous iterations of such procedures, provide for exemptions and special rules. That is, certain programs and activities are exempt from sequestration, and certain other programs are governed by special rules regarding the application of a sequester. Whats Affected By Sequestration When Congress uses sequestration, spending cuts happen to to both military and non-military spending, including important social programs such as Medicare. Most of the mandatory spending cuts come from non-military agencies and programs in the departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Energy, Environmental Protection, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, NASA and Transportation. Whats Not Affected by Sequestration Several programs - most notable those for senior citizens, veterans and the poor - are exempt from sequestration cuts. They include Social Security, Veterans Affairs, Medicaid, food stamps and Supplemental Security Income. Medicare, however, is subject to automatic cuts under sequestration. Its spending cannot be reduced by more than 2 percent, however. Also exempt from sequestration are congressional salaries. So even though federal works are furloughed or laid off to save money, elected officials still get paid. Sequestrationà History The idea of imposing automatic spending cuts in the federal budget was first put in place by the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985. Sequestration is rarely used, however, because of the negative consequences severe spending cuts have on programs and services for citizens. Even when Congress uses sequestration, it does so as a political tool to force voluntarily spending reductions and often doesnt allow the full cuts to take effect. Modern Examples of Sequestration The most recent sequester was used in the Budget Control Act of 2011 to encourage Congress to reduce the annual deficit by $1.2 trillion by the end of 2012. When lawmakers failed to do so, the law triggered automatic budget cuts to the 2013 national security budget. A super Congress made up of a select group of 12 members of both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate was chosen in 2011 to identify ways to reduce the national debt by $1.2 trillion over 10 years. The super Congress failed to reach an agreement, however. The sequestration cuts imposed in the 2011 legislation took effect in 2013 and continue through 2021. Opposition to Sequestration Critics of sequestration say spending cuts threaten national security through Defense Department reductions and harm the economy because federal works are often furloughed or laid off. These cuts will make it harder to grow our economy and create jobs by affecting our ability to invest in important priorities like education, research and innovation, public safety, and military readiness, said President Barack Obama, who was in office when the sequestration cuts of 2013 took effect.

Film Triumph des Willens Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Film Triumph des Willens - Movie Review Example The film is made in the framework of an epic documentary. It employs many dramatic effects such as framing and sequencing to heighten the heroic ambition of the film. Hitler's obsession with being the savior of Germany can be seen in the opening scene. The clouds give way to the city of Nuremberg as an airplane descends from the sky. Hitler exits the plane and leaves no doubt that the film is about Hitler and not a factual representation of the Socialist Rally. Much of the film highlights Hitler as it attempts to connect the dictator with the German people. The motorcade scene is shot in wide angle from a distance to give the feeling of the gathering crowds. The shot then switches to the limousine as if the viewers were watching through Hitler's eyes. This dramatic sequencing sets up the connection between Hitler and the German people. This connection to the public is further demonstrated in the film with the use of close ups on women and children. They are smiling, healthy, and praising the dictator. Critics have contended that the film was staged and therefore is of no historical importance. However, it should be noted that this was a political rally, which are often attended only by supporters and often hold staged events. Triumph des Willens's value is the accurate portrayal of Hitler as a meglo-maniac and self obsessed dictator. This can be seen in the low angled shots that make his image loom over the surroundings. To further solidify the film's historical perspective there is the gratuitous use of fear throughout the film. The military that marches in precision is an indicator that the military was under Hitler's control. It was a polished and well-equipped organization that could instill fear in the population or be unleashed in a coming war. Hitler's march through the masses of gathered soldiers is a genuine historical record of the size and obedience of the German army at that time. Though the film is a piece of Nazi propaganda that was staged to promote the Socialist Party movement, it is also a primary source and a historical document. It illustrates the rise of a genocidal dictatorship through dramatic exaggeration and propaganda. The director originated filming techniques that have become the standard for current docu-dramas and feature films. Early study of the film could have predicted Hitler's eventual hostile tendencies and thirst for world domination. Works Cited Triumph des Willens (Triumph of the Will). Dir. Leni Riefenstahl. Perf. An Unsuccessful India :: essays research papers
India is one of the worlds oldest and richest civilizations, the treasure chest of the Far East, and the desire of all the great powers of Europe. After years of battle it ended up under the control of Britain, making it "the most precious jewel in the crown of the Empire". Yet for India, the rule of the British did not bring promises of rebuilding a nation. Rather, it brought new dilemmas to face the Indian people. The British constantly exploited the nation for its prime resources and yet India had no gain from them. As the British Empire expanded, the wealth, resources and power of India attenuated. Slowly the suffering of the people of India grew. Meanwhile, Britain concentrated on increasing profits for its share-holders and officials, neglecting the suffering people of India and not to mention draining the wealth out of a great nation. Furthermore, new British laws destroyed the Indian industries that the British actually helped create in the first place. Their new British laws were also responsible for an enormous unemployment rate. Finally, India was ruled by a country that knew nothing about them and could not sympathize with them or rule them properly. India, at the time, had previously supported the Roman Empire under its rule with jewelry, spices and even clothing. It also was one of the oldest, and at the same time, richest places in the world. A huge number of people lived in India making it one of the biggest colonies in the world. After being dominated by the Roman Empire, India was ruled by the Portuguese. However, the Portuguese were only interested in India's trade so they monopolized on it. Europeans' began to see the true value of India. The Dutch then attacked the Portuguese in India and took over the country. Soon the Dutch were defeated by the French and, finally, in 1757 the British defeated the French decisively and then conquered India by using the method of "divide and rule". Before the British victory over France, in the sixteenth century, India was conquered by the Moslems from the north. In India the majority of the people supported the Hindu religion and the Moslems were supporters of the prophet Mohammed. This caused great tension between the Hindu people and Moslem leaders which contributed to the downfall of the Moslem Empire. Shortly after the crash of the empire, local rulers began to fight amongst themselves for land and power.

Analyse an parfume advertisement and discuss the imagery it contains
Analyse an advertisement and discuss the imagery it contains. Evaluate the success of the advertisers approach and give reasons for your opinions. How would you adapt the advertisement to make it suitable for different target audience? Explain your approach using semiotics. The purpose of advertising is to inform potential customers about products and services and how to obtain them. Every medium is used to show these advertisements, including television, radio, movies, magazines, newspapers, video games, the Internet and billboards. Semiotics is how we view advertisements all the time and notice all of the detail. Ferdinand de Saussure used his theory of signs and semiotics to explore and analyse specific adverts. We can evaluate how well adapted it is to its target audience. In 1974 Ferdinand de Saussure claimed, ââ¬Å"Only a social group can generate signs.â⬠In order to create imagery, the advertiser has used deep rich colour of dark blue to attract the consumer's attention to the perfume as this gives the impression of a seductive fragrance. The whole advert gives the impression of the night and this then shows lust as it is dark. The advertiser has been successful by using a dark colour as the main colour for the advert as dark colours create a sense of sexual activity in the dark. The perfume bottle, for which this advert is for, is used to create the imagery of the moon in the sky as it is shaped like a half moon. It gives the idea to the audience that the perfume is sensual as it is shining light onto the women's chest and she is posed in a sexual way with eyes closed and a hand on her neck. This imagery appeals to the consumer as it suggests that the perfume will make one become sensuous once wearing it. The words, ââ¬ËDeep Night' are used on the advert. These words are used to create an imagery of sexual activity and using the word ââ¬Ënight' makes the audience think of things happening in the night for example sex. The advertiser is not very successful and this is because not many readers will look at the words and then interpret it in this way. Instead of focusing on the words, the reader then focuses on the model. The words, ââ¬ËThe fragrance of love' are used on the advert. This shows this perfume is the perfume of love, and so by buying it, this perfume can bring you love. This phrase is easily interpreted by the audience and so this makes the advertisers approach successful. Also the fact that this particular perfume is love bound for the audience is showed by the advertiser using the words ââ¬Ëthe fragrance of love'. The model on the advert has her hand by her breasts. This reveals a lust for sex and a plea for men to buy the fragrance for their woman so they can engage in sexual activity aswell. The advertiser was successful by this approach and this is shown by the advert promoting sexual activity. The models top in the advert is very revealing to the audience and her breasts are clearly shown. The advertiser has used this revealing top to get attention by males so -this makes the male think their wife can reveal this top by them buying this perfume for their wife. The advertiser was successful in his attempt to promote sexual activity and this is proven by the models revealing top. The model on the advert has her mouth open and the advertiser shows sexual activity by this. The advertiser was successful by showing a lust for sex and this is shown by the models open mouth. By making the model have her mouth open slightly, it creates a sense of sexual activity and makes the buyer want it even more. The word, ââ¬Ëghost' is used on the advert. This creates a dark image by thinking of ghosts. When anyone thinks of ghosts they think of the night. The advertiser has done what he aimed for by using the word, ââ¬Ëghost'. The advertiser was successful by using the word, ââ¬Ëghost'; this is because a dark imagery is created by this. The audience can easily interpret ââ¬Ëghost' as it is there to put a dark atmosphere in our heads. This advertisement can be adapted to a different target audience to women who are in their mid-thirties. The women would wear a suit and to show she's a businessman which then shows control. Her breasts would only be concealed a bit to show maturity but still keep the seductiveness on a level. I would keep the colour purple because its do with passion. I would keep the models mouth slightly open to show a lust for sex still in there. I would keep the moon shaped perfume the same as it creates a dark atmosphere. In conclusion I think the advertiser has done very well to get his ideas out to the audience and this can be proven by various reasons. The advertiser has used dark colours all over the advert and used a moon as a shape for the perfume bottle. He also used different words to give the audience a dark image and these words make them want to buy this fragrance. The advertiser uses the model to create a sexy image in the advert and this is done by short tops and her mouth being open slightly.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, is a novel that explores how dreadful and evil the Holocaust was through the eyes of an innocent child. Boyne understands that for the readers to truly understand the horror of Holocaust, it has to be told through the eyes of someone who has lived through it. Parenting Style of the Watsons Essay - 1711 Words
Parenting styles are very important in influencing childrenââ¬â¢s behavior, and the styles form the context in which childrenââ¬â¢s behavior might occur (Fox para. 2). There are four different types of parenting styles. These styles, developed by child psychologist Diana Baumrind, who provides a majority of the information found in the book Understanding Children and Adolescents, include authoritative, permissive, authoritarian, and neglectful/uninvolved (Forsyth 376). In the extremely funny childrenââ¬â¢s book The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963, the author Christopher Paul Curtis uses the familyââ¬â¢s life and adventure as a way of showing many characteristics of a particular parenting style used on the children. The main focus is on Byron andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The authoritative parent allows his or her children to help in resolving problems, and if the childââ¬â¢s suggestion is a reasonable solution, the parent responds in a manner that is flexible enou gh to make the appropriate changes. The children of authoritative parents are well adjusted, friendly, happy, confident, and high achievers. The authoritative parenting approach is associated with the best outcomes for childrenââ¬â¢s behavior (Horton-Parker para. 17). Instead, the parent accepts whatever the child chooses to do. The permissive parent offers no structure and gives the child more freedom to reign than a child at that maturity level can handle. This parenting style is partly humanistic, but the lack of consistency and structure explains explains why childrenââ¬â¢s outcomes do not reflect pro-social behavior. These children exhibit highly immature behavior and are described as impulse aggressive (Horton-Parker para. 16). Baumrindââ¬â¢s third type of parenting style is the authoritarian approach. The authoritarian parent exerts high control but is not very nurturing or warm (Forsyth 376). Like the authoritative parents, authoritarian parents are high in control and demandingness, but they are low in the humanistic qualities of warmth and responsiveness. The Qinghai-Tibet Railway originates in Xining, capital of Qinghai Province, which is 1,142 kilometers (713 miles) long. With about 600 kilometers of the railway is built within the Tibet Autonomous Region, it is however, the first railway that linking Tibet with the western part of China, and it will extend from Lhasa, the Tibetan capital to Golmud, a traffic hub in Qinghai Province. Once the construction completed, it will become the longest and most elevated railway built on highlands in the world, and will later be extended to Shigaze and Linzhi in Tibet, and Yunnan Province in southwest China. We will write a custom essay sample on The Qinghai-Tibet Railway or any similar topic only for you Order Now The acme of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is 5,072 meters above sea level, and more than 960 kilometers, or four-fifths of the railway will be built at an altitude of more than 4,000 meters. Nearly half of the railway (550 kilometers) will be laid on continuous and permanent frozen earth, and the rest of the railway will pass through the grasslands, natural reserve zone, wetlands, and also the arid desert region. The Chinese Government has wanted to build such a railway since the 1950s, shortly after the Communist Army took over control of Tibet. However, the project was postponed for decades due to the construction difficulties with the altitude, terrain, and also the shortage of capital sources. Nevertheless, the dream of building such a railway linking to Tibet has never been gave up by the Chinese Authorities, for which the construction planning, reconnaissance, and feasibility research study has been took place in Qinghai-Tibet plateau for many years ever since the 1960s. In 1984, the Xining-Golmud Railway was completed, the first phase of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, which is 815 kilometers long. However, the construction discontinued due to extreme weather condition, terrain, and altitude. In February 2001, the China State Council has approved the construction plan of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway after reviewed the official report submitted by the State Planning Commission. The construction project will take seven years to complete with a sum of 4 billion US Dollars (approx. 32 billion Chinese RMB) total investment. Building the worldââ¬â¢s most elevated and longest railways, indeed, is not only a trial to a Countryââ¬â¢s combine national power, and her technology level. In contrast to its several billion dollar of investment, the short-term economic benefit is incommensurate de facto, but it serves for a long-term economic benefit and extensively political and military meanings. Currently, the only transportation to Tibet is limited to ground and air transport, which is deficiency to meet the demand for developing Tibetââ¬â¢s economy. In compare to the prosperous eastern seaboard, Tibet remains as the most backward region in China at a little bit more above the national average income for farmers and herdsmen. According to the Himal South Asian magazine (Sept 2002); the current disparity between rural, ââ¬Å"impoverishedâ⬠Tibetans and urban, ââ¬Å"developedâ⬠Chinese then, is a problem for the Beijing administration. The dominant point of view in Beijing is that Tibet has been a messy backyard that remains an embarrassment; for they realize that a radically under-developed Tibet will tarnishes the image of a new China. It is neither the result of a coherent and successful policy, nor a carefully crafted plan to keep Tibetans down. It is an undeniable fact that, once the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is completed, it will bring a convenient transportation way to and from Lhasa, and it eventually lead to a result of overwhelming influx of Chinese migrants, unemployed, and the laid-off workers of the over-saturated eastern coastal cities to migrating to the Tibet Autonomous Region seeking for working and business opportunity. However, these Chinese do not come all the way here to Tibet just to preach Maoism or even Han-ism, and they are concerned about Tibetans only in as much as a Tibetan might endanger or increase their chances to make money. Their opportunities mainly depend on the large government-subsidized projects that fuel Tibetââ¬â¢s tertiary economy. Without these, they would have to be left floating again and would drift to the next prospective region all over the country. This controversial railway construction plan has gained great attention for Overseas Tibetans and Tibetan observers over the world after the Chinese government reveal its plan as part of the so-called Western Development Strategy. The Tibetan Action Committee stated that they are afraid once the Qinghai-Tibet Railway plan completed, it will decimate the Tibetanââ¬â¢s cultural and traditions and therefore it will destroyed Tibetanââ¬â¢s unique identity and turn Tibetan to become sinicize. As the action committee still regards the presence of Communist administration in Tibet since the 1950s as an occupation; in contrast to what the Communist administration called it the ââ¬Å"peaceful liberationâ⬠. Therefore, it is not too hard to understand for their worries of the railway construction that link to Lhasa will bring tightening military grip over Tibet , and a much faster and convenient way for logistics supply. Looking at it another way, once the railway is completed, Tibetan herdsman can easily sell their sheer product outside the border, plus more consumer products can enter Tibet which can be improve Tibetansââ¬â¢ living standard, where the price will go down due to scarcity of goods. This will greatly benefit Tibetan throw off poverty and enter to a much faster economy development track, isnââ¬â¢t it just great for everyone? As business is business, the company needs not to get involve into politic that much. Like the Chinese saying ââ¬Å"The water that bears the boat is the same that swallows itâ⬠; if you take weapons like gun for example, it can be use for murder, robbery, self-protection, and of course, use by authorities to saving civilianââ¬â¢s life. Thus, it is absolutely depending on how people use it; anything else is out of the question. What the Tibetan Action Committee worries can be taken as a consideration for the company while considered the offer, but it shall not be the sole consideration factor that affects the company on the railway contract offer by the Chinese Government. The Use of Suspense in Julius Caesar Essay Example For Students
The Use of Suspense in Julius Caesar Essay Suspense can be defined as the uncertainties the reader feels about what will happen next in a story, or in this case, a play. William Shakespeare incorporated in Julius Caesar three very suspenseful events on which the whole play depends. The first suspenseful event of this play occurs when the conspirators join and discuss their reasons for assassination. Cassius feels that he is equal to Caesar, if not even better that him. Shakespeare builds suspense by using this statement made by Cassius: I was born free as Caesar/we both have fed as well, and we can both / endure the winters cold as well as he. Then cassius tries to persuade Brutes to join in on the conspiracy by telling him that it would be honorable to assassinate Caesar. Cassius tells Brutes that the fate of Rome is in trouble with Caesar in power, which helps build suspense early in the play. To convince Brutes conclusively, cassius forged letters and threw them into Brutuss window where he was sure to find them. Shakespeare wrote this statement: we will awake him and be sure of him. This is a very powerful statement that builds suspense because the reader most likely feels that Brutes will join in and want to assassinate Caesar, yet the reader is uncertain as to whether or not the plan will work. These events are very suspenseful as they lead up to the assassination of Caesar. We will write a custom essay on The Use of Suspense in Julius Caesar specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The next series of suspenseful events that foreshadow Caesars assassination happen on a very unusual night. One night before Caesars death there were many strange occurrences the foreshadows darkness in the future. A lioness gave birth in the streets, the dead rose from their graves, fiery worriers fought in the clouds so fiercely that blood drizzled upon the capitol, horses neighed, dying men groaned, and ghosts shrieked and squealed along the streets; all events of this strange night that Shakespeare makes so suspenseful. Also on this unusual nigh, Calpurnia had a very frightening dream that was very suspenseful. The dream was of Caesars statue emitting blood and many Romans were bathing in it. When the reader reads this he is on the edge of his seat finding that he cannot wait to find out what this dream foreshadows. Calpurnia was so frightened by these strange occurrences that she begged Caesar not to leave the house. Shakespeare created suspense by having Caesar speak these word s: and these does she apply for warnings and portents / and evils imminent, and on her knee / hath begged that I will stay at home today. These events add suspense while foreshadowing the climax of the play, Caesars death, which occurs in act iii. The next suspenseful part of the play occurs after Caesar is assassinated and the reader is left to find out what will happen as the play progresses. After killing Caesar, the conspirators feel that they have created a better place to live. Shakespeare writes, liberty! Freedom! Tyranny is dead! / Run hence, proclaim, cry it about in the streets. As the conspirators soon found out, the people of Rome are panic-stricken because of the assassination, not grateful. Trebonius speads these words that are very suspenseful because the reader wanders what will result of the reaction of the people: men, wives, and children stare, cry out, and run / as it were doomsday. After the assassination of Caesar, Antony begins to show his feelings and becomes very dangerous, as cassius feared. Antonys soliloquy reveals that he seeks revenge and will wage war on the conspirators. He will cry havoc and have dead and rotting men lying unburied. These events are suspenseful as they foreshadow the extreme po litical conflicts to come. .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b , .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b .postImageUrl , .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b , .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b:hover , .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b:visited , .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b:active { border:0!important; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b:active , .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubcba5b3c856fe06c4bc858f867f4982b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Racial Profiling EssayThe three events were very effective methods of adding suspense to the play.
